As I hold my breath whilst writing this article piece, I reflect on the friend, enemy, acquaintance,
family member, passer-by whom I’ve come across and my nose began to tingle at the colossal
stench that simply could not be ignored. Even though I tried to refrain from the thought, it rang
clear to me that merely withholding oxygen could not do the trick. Therefore, not wanting to be
the insulter, the worthy hypocrite character stood strong.
Awakened from my dreams on numerous occasions, to what has become a literal nightmare,
today I speak out, in writing fashion.
It has been almost a week since my nose has been bombarded with this stalking odor that hails
all the way from Yallahs, St. Thomas. A citizen in the Kingston area, I am annoyed at the fact
that people are still resistant to the notion that states “Keep your environment clean.” So careless
are the thoughts of man to think that an action in this form would not have a resounding reaction.
The National Environment & Planning Agency (NEPA) through the numerous complaints
received from Jamaicans instigated an investigation and has possibly found the culprit of the
eminent odor. Reports are that the likely culprit could stem from the Yallahs pond, and a mixture
of debris has blocked the natural flow between the sea and ponds.
Debris, in my opinion is not likely the only source that has caused a stench this strong.
Unscrupulous “individuals” who find it easier to dump their waste in the nearest pond, instead of
the proper disposal of sewage waste are also a likely cause.
The paranoia that has surfaced, thoughts reigning from “Why does this smell keep following
me?”, “I hope I’m not the only one who smells this?”, “OMG, when will this end?” are just some
of the less dramatic deliberations I share in hope that others relate similar sentiments.
No need to watch a horror movie tonight as I am surely living one. A slow but dreadful death in
the air, I await on NEPA and the National Works Agency (N.W.A) to work their magic and
resurrect the Life in the air, I call this killer “The Stench”.
A new realization of the word “stench” has led me to wonder, if I overhear two or more persons
in a dialogue dispute and one is referred to as smelling, looking, or simply put a product of bowel
movement, would I ever breathe again?
